Hehe, I still have my old Casio CZ-1 that I bought back in 1995 or so :) Never used it much for it's built-in synthesis, but bought it primarily as a MIDI controller/keyboard to feed my other PC MIDI hardware... still use it even today for that exact same purpose :)

I had a CZ 1000. The presets were ok but you could program tremendous sounding basses strings and leads if you took the time to learn how. No knobs on the front panel made it tricky. And the small lcd didn't help but I'd love to have one again. I spent hours trancing out playing that beautiful synth. With some effort it could sound enormous and heavy or dreamlike and transcendent . A great machine.

Just recently purchased one of these bad boys from a pawn shop. I had no idea what I was getting myself into o.o

@dvamateur I'm kicking myself for missing out on a VZ-1 that went for 50 GBP on Ebay only yesterday :-( I'm also on the look out for an HT 6000 to complement my HT 700 (which I want to mod with external filter controls, it's a bit battered so I'm not too fussed about modding it) and of course my CZ-1. Casio really should come back into the pro market, or at least re-release updated versions of the CZ/ VZ/ HT range.

@zibbybone, many thanks for posting this video as it helped me decide to get one to replace my CZ 3000. Yes, some of the presets are thin and cheesy (but still useable), and as benanderson88 says if you program and/ or modify presets with more complex structures you can get some really thick analogue'ish sounds out of it. A very cool and underrated synth for those that don't know about it's hidden secrets and potential.

Occasionally sounds a little cheesy, like the SA-10 I had when I was a kid, but still pretty impressive. I wish they hadn't left the business.

Great stuff and a good example of the versatility of this synth. Does anyone know how to dump sounds you've created via sysex? I have MIDIQuest 10 and it says the CZ1 won't send it's voice data but will receive it. Is this true and is there a way round it? Otherwise all my sounds I've programmed cannot be backed up on computer. I have a RAM cart but I'm running out of space on it.
Is that aftertouch vibrato youre doing, controllable on the fly with the modulation wheel? Or do you have to program it internally for each patch?
Thanks!

@leverage1976 The vibrato is controlled via aftertouch and/or mod wheel. These are factory patches and I did not do any further programming.

I would never think that one day a Roland keyboard would appear to me cheesy compared with a Casio. And that's the case today with the Fantom keyboards compared to the 80's Casios. No offense meant, it's just my opinion. I think that the '80s Casios are some of the coolest instruments around together with Yamaha DX-series and Roland D-series (sans the D-70, because that's not really a D-series synth anymore).

To each their own. In addition to the arsenal of vintage analogs, digitals and hybrids, I own 2 Fantom X6's (one @ home & one @ work) for realistic traditional sounds. The D-50 & D-550 are certainly the "kings" of the D series, but I'll take a D-70 over a D-5/10/20/110/MT-32 any day. The D-70 is actually an extention of the U series and was named U-50 during R&D.

your video has hum and hiss.
the hum could be the cable ground broken, but the hiss?

It's probably the camera. All the videos I filmed before Feb. 2009 were done with a JVC GZ-HD7 which has a stereo mic jack, but does add some hiss. Since Feb, I've been using an older Sony VX-2000 which has an attenuating switch for mic/line. This video was filmed in January, but wasn't edited down and posted until July. Stay tuned for more videos! That means SUBSCRIBE.
