NAHB is a supporter of this years 2009 Solar Decathlon, sponsoring the Peoples Choice Awards and a luncheon. The Solar Decathlon, taking place October 9-13th and 15-19th and held every two years on the National Mall, is a competition in which 20 teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. NAHB participated in the 2007 event. For more information about NAHBs involvement, contact Ken Sagan at ksagan@nahb.com. Also visit www.solardecathlon.org. The key to passive solar design which works with the Earth a performs well in cloudy weather is high thermal mass and large insulated liquid tanks. See James H. Klippel's video on a small organic solar cottage for a low budget. He incorporates 3000 gallon Haase tanks, (t 425-1150 )
