California will be closer than most people realize. If the Republicans contest California, at the very least it could keep Dems from spending California funds on other competitive states.
After 2010, Republicans will likely have the governor seat and a senate seat. Obama's support will be much softer than it was in 2008. California can be a battleground state again... with unemployment caused by liberal policies, state finances strained, and a conservative message and a popular candidate.
