Jeremy Clarkson describes the Mazda MX-5 as perfect. Our own journalist, Allan Dick from Driver magazine describes it as timeless and David Linklater goes so far as to comment that the latest MX-5 model contains elements that are a "work of genius".
There is just no denying that the Mazda MX-5 is one of the most fun to drive convertibles on the road today - it's no wonder that it has been named the worlds favourite two seated roadsters.
2009 marks the 20th anniversary of this spectacular little sports car and recent additions to the model line up have seen the model continue to grow over recent years. To mark this special anniversary, the MX-5 owners club (one of the largest vehicle owners clubs in NZ) in conjuction with Mazda NZ got together to organise a celebration of the name plate in the form of a NZ top-to-tail rally.
Two convoys - one beginning in sunny Auckland, one down in the deep south of Invercargill - took off on Monday 19th October with their ultimate destination being Nelson on Friday 23rd October. Both convoys were led by Mazda NZ representatives travelling in the latest 2009 model MX-5 Coupes, including two limited anniversary edition MX-5 Coupes in Sunflower Yellow complete with white racing stripes, 17" alloy wheels, aluminum pedal and leather recaro racing seats.
Over the course of the week, both convoys travlled through rural and urban areas of New Zealand, visiting local Mazda dealers and welcoming MX-5 owners to the convoy throughout different legs of the journey. Some passionate MX-5 owners travelled with the convoy the whole way, others choose to either join in for a day or two while the convoy travelled through their region. All in all, it was a sight to behold watching many MX-5's across various generations of the model in convoy along some of New Zealands most spectacular landscapes.
