The original Kingston Trio of Dave Guard, Bob Shane, and Nick Reynolds performs a classic American folk song in a very early rehearsal recording from spring of 1957, a full year before the release of their first landmark album in June of 1958. This arrangement follows the traditional version of the song fairly closely and differs significantly from an alternate arrangement named "Across The Wide Missouri" that the Trio eventually released in 1959 on their Capitol album "Here We Go Again." As you will hear, the reel-to-reel tape that was recording this number ran out right before the group finished the song. From the 2010 Kingston Trio Productions album "Above The Purple Onion," a 2010 release that documents early rehearsals and performances from the group's first professional engagement at this legendary San Francisco night spot.
This was one of my favorite first songs I remember growing up.

Good folk ballad, makes me yearn for the days when this was popular (especially after looking at what's popular today)
