When I was young, any merc found on a battlefield was summarily executed anyplace in the world. They were thought of as trash - like vermin, or scavengers. Practically speaking, the problem with mercs has always been they're in it for profits, period. If you can pay them, your enemy can always pay them more. Then where are you? A military made up of your own people have another motive, just as practical, that goes beyond money - it's his home he fights for. Or it should be.
