Atmospheric scientist Ken Caldeira asserts that as long as any amount of carbon is emitted into the atmosphere, temperatures will continue to increase. "The only plausible way in which we could start the earth cooling this century is to directly intervene in the climate system."

-----

Should humans address man-made rising temperatures and sea levels by tinkering further with mother nature? A lively debate about geoengineering has burst into the mainstream recently with reference to Ken Caldeira's work in the final chapter of the popular book SuperFreakonomics.

This panel takes a measured look at the good, bad and ugly of what could and should be done. What is technically feasible? How could new tactics be tested? Does the mere possibility of geoengineering diminish efforts to reduce carbon pollution? Our speakers share their distinct perspectives on this passionate environmental topic.

Ken Caldeira is an atmospheric scientist who works at the Carnegie Institution for Science's Department of Global Ecology. He researches ocean acidification, climate effects of trees, intentional climate modification, and interactions in the global carbon/climate system. He also works as a staff scientist for Intellectual Ventures, a Seattle-based invention and patent company headed up by Nathan Myhrvold.

Caldeira's work was featured in a November 2006 article in The New Yorker, entitled "The Darkening Sea." In 2007, he contributed two op-ed pieces on the subject of global warming to The New York Times. He was named a "Hero Scientist of 2008" by New Scientist magazine.

  • Soooo....we need to stop breathing?

  • "are you saying the rainforest plays no part in the climate system?"

Of course not. I'm totally with you on deforrestation, and yes the oil companies have a lot to answer for. One of the major issues is that many of the big oil companies are run by Muslim and Christian creationists, who either don't believe modern science or actually look forward to somekind of armageddon.

  • it seems to me that aerosol spraying would put a blanket over around the earth like they are doing with geo engineering (chem spraying) science and common sense tells me if im cold, wrap me in a blanket,if mother earth is warming...take the blanket OFF!

  • So this guy actively supporting chemtrails?

  • @boxcar12 Carnegie is Rockefeller's baby. If you don't know the tentacles of this "institution" then I suggest you start reading. Frankly I am tired of explaining this to people. Go along and believe what you like about anything you like. When Rockefeller is involved in anything it speaks volumes as to it's goals. Try just a wee bit of critical thinking here. These power people have polluted the world a million times over. The same people have a solution ? lol Damn ~ think !

  • @RenegadeTimes

What about Carnegie Institution? Are you referring to the fact that it is located at Stanford University? What other facts are you referring to that I need to have "done my homework" for? Nothing from what you said was evidence towards your cause and is continuing to make you look like a blabber conspiracy theorist. Lets just say that the funders for his research are using him as there puppet. That still doesn't prevent scientists WORLDWIDE from refuting it or disproving hiswork

  • @boxcar12 Carnegie Institution ? Kenny work for them ? Do some homework. these "brilliant" minds are talking BS. Peer review . lol Lobbysist review. Carnegie .....lol Me thinks you the idiot sir or madame.

  • @RenegadeTimes

What makes you think Ken is not in support of this either? I also fail to see how he is a liar, and for that fact any honest working researcher. He is a person presenting hypothesis that are peer reviewed and widely accepted. The scientific community would quickly find its shortcomings. Anyone can try to prove his work wrong, but I doubt you have the capacity to do so, other than using naive, bias, and idiotic rantings with no political or scientific background to back them up.

  • @GOPsithlord

Do you know how little C02 from every breathing person compares to the entire volume and concentration of the atmosphere? The fact of the matter is that human actions such as urbanization and industrialization are a constant source of emission that is adding to the natural background of Green House Gases. It is not about saving the planet, we will all die way before we completely destroy the earth. So many people forget to look outside of the tiny human ant scale.

  • Fouling up the atmosphere is what got us into this mess, so let's dump more chemicals into the air. Chemicals that diminish our health and kill plantlife, make birds drop from the sky, wipe out the bee population... Brilliant fucking plan.

  • ^

Hey everybody! Look at the well-paid liar!

  • @GOPsithlord No we need to stop drilling Drilling millions of holes in our planet cant be good for global temperatures.E=mc2
