Pipis or Cockles are a great local bait for Bream and Whiting. Frozen baits work but aren't ideal. The 'Pipi Shuffle' is one way to find them, but I find that just walking the beach is the most efficient, and less stress on your arches too!

  • imagine the days every one foot a pipi

  • @drewee88 It can be like that. A couple of years back at Stockton Beach (NSW Newcastle area) around 50 or so pipi's were pulled from a 2m x 2m area of sand. I showed some young kids how to break into them without a knife. They loved them, can't say I enjoyed the taste though!

  • Hey there! Helpful, but sound and explanation would be more helpful. Does it have to be low tide - i.e. do they tend to be very low down in the tide line? Are you looking for a small raised area of sand? Thanks!!

  • Yeah, between mid and low tide just walk along the beach until you see the little raised lumps of sand. Heavier gauge sand (not the finer stuff) seems to hold more pipis, probably because they can burrow into it easier.

  • netting them in the surf line is the easiest you can get your daily limit in 1/2 an hour if you need it. we usually go and get 100-150 though.
