In 1967, Michael Martin Murphey formed the "Lewis & Clarke Expedition" with Owen Castleman and recorded one self-titled album for Colgems Records. They had a modest hit with "I Feel Good (I Feel Bad)." Here's the original version of the song made famous by Mark Lindsay and the Raiders!

  • Wow, if Paul Revere and the Raiders had not done this song the world would have been stuck with this version.

  • Which means nobody would even know about the song :)

  • OK, so maybe the Raiders had a better "pop" record but this one has "soul" even if it is a bit rough around the edges.

  • Don Fardon did this also

  • If I recall, "Indian Reservation" was "shopped" around to different publishing houses, record labels and networks. A few groups and solo artists recorded demos of this tune. I remember that Glen Campbell, Joe South, Tommy Roe all had turned down this song.

I believe a New York advertising agency pitched "Indian Reservation" to several States as an "ad campaign" idea..... ? ?

  • J.D. Loudermilk, penned this tune. This was his last big songwriting success, "Indian Reservation," which topped the charts for Paul Revere & the Raiders in 1971 (it had previously been a hit for British singer Don Fardon). Loudermilk wrote many hits for other artists, "Tobacco Road" Nashville Teens, "Waterloo" (Stonewall Jackson), "Angela Jones" (Johnny Ferguson), "Ebony Eyes" (the Everly Brothers), "Norman" (Sue Thompson), and "Abilene" (George Hamilton IV).

  • I'm reading comments and disagreeing. The Raiders version was a real improvement but to call this "horrible" or equate it to "rap" does not hold water. I think most people grow up listening to their favorite version and a different version comes along and it gets blasted. I was struck by the starkness of this and "I'll be a red man 'till I die" is sung with enough emotion for me. Even though I still like The Raider's better, I can still like this as well. Just food for thought.

  • this is HORRIBLE

  • Hey, Skinny, why not upload the whole suite so people can know how good this album really is? Paul Revere and the Raiders may have made this one song famous, but to hear the whole epic as done by L&CE is to hear the Truth.

  • damn this sucks!! its amazing how much difference a good producer can make.

  • The late John London of Michael Nesmith's First National Band on bass.

  • Sorry this is no good...Paul Revere and the Raiders had a better take on this....
