this interview was before interventions.. especially of high profile people, was common place.. like today? If she was alive today.. i presume she would have gone through "rehab" at least once.. I wonder if she was admitted to the hospital for drug or alcohol intoxication before this interview.

Judy was much like many of us, myself included, who have battled alcoholism/addiction. And, one of the first signs of addiction is denial. This tape clearly shows Judy under the influence of a mind altering substance, yet she still believes she "has it under control." Had there been a Betty Ford Center back then, Judy could possibly still be here and about to celebrate her 90th birthday in June. She was simply born too long ago and taken to soon. See ya over the rainbow Judy!

@esty268 I agree. I think it's wrong to say that Judy was perfect and that she wasn't a drug addict when she clearly was: watch?v=pi_xjmfoop0. To me, it makes her legacy much more important because it shows the downsides of the industry. As for Babs, she's ALWAYS been like this. She loves to pry. As an interviewer I might understand, but this was the age before stars gave 1,000 interviews in their career. Judy didn't give THAT many interviews and never spoke about her personal issues.

Wow, it's kind of sad how some of you romanticize her. You demonize Barbara Walters for daring to ask the question, but the actual reality of her life, sitting around drunk and ranting, is so much classless and tacky than a silly question. You can't selectively ignore how out of it and what a nightmare she was.

kids fidgeting like a motherfucker

@windstorm1000 Her kids knew ALL about her drug addiction. They had first-hand knowledge of it. They were severely affected by it. Walter's question didn't faze them.

It's sad that Judy had to lie on national television. People weren't ready in those days to accept a celebrity confessing to an addiction. And most Americans were very intolerant of her. She got a lot of bad press & bad fan mail. But what most people don't know is that 1) she went into a treatment program in Boston in 1968 for one of her addictions & 2) she worked with a doctor to get her sleeping pill dosage down to two per night. She was almost clean when she died.

..shows that have good things to say to help people.. The View since Lisa Ling and Meredith Viera left is a piece of crap.. Barbra is 81 years old and has had so much plastic surgery it's ridiculous.. I hate hasselbeck though.. stupid no good for nothing whining assed voice.. I hate her and will never watch the show ever again because of her..I think Whoopie and Joy just deal with that loser because they have to for now... pretty soon she won't have a job..that ass!!! she needs to learn to shut
Walters asks Judy about her drug use in front of her kids! Doesn't she have any class? Such a tacky 'journalist'.

@NFitalianGuy , I totally agree with you. Barbara Walters in my opinion has been quite mediocre during her entire career, extremely overpaid, boring and on top of all that she doesn't retire, she keeps on and on. Judy was one of the greatest entertainers ever, if not the greatest of them all.
