AR Rahman on Tamil Anthem :
"The Tamil was of a very high standard and I initially wondered how I was going to do it, but thankfully it has come out well."

"It took two to two-and-a-half months, but we were working with a large crew -- almost 70 singers,"


"All of us together worked on the anthem -- There was TMS [T.M. Soundararajan], Yuvan [Shankar Raja], Shruti Hassan, P.Sushila...(to name a few). Basically, I have been busy in Hollywood and also touring. Therefore I was working on a tight schedule and was available only for two or three days, so people who could come then joined us,A new verse on Kamban and Avvaiyar was added almost when the composing was over, and had to be incorporated into the final cut."


TMS begins with "Pirapokkum Ella Uyirkkum," the first lines of the anthem composed by Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi. Some of the other top playback artistes featuring in the anthem include Harini, Hariharan, Benny Dayal, Srinivas, Vijay Jesudas, Naresh Iyer. My nephew G.V.Prakash and sister Rehana have also joined the ensemble.


The thing about this anthem, is that it also features singers who have distinguished themselves in other genres of music such as Carnatic (Aruna Sayeeram, Bombay Jaishree, Nithyashree and Sowmya), folk, Sufi (M.Y.Abdul Ghani, Khajamoideen, S.Sabumoideen), and even rap (Blaaze). Another key aspect is that three generations of singers have participated.

I think you will hear the words in this song. In fact we have kept the instruments to a minimum so that the words are clear. The traditional Tamil nagaswaram and tavil blend melodiously with the guitar and drums, even as the carnatic notes wind seamlessly with the rap.

@bmkaruppan Why would or should Maharashtra Rs.25,000 cr, Bal Thackeray will protest !! If Thackerary has his way, first the Tamils will have to vacate Dharavi, and this balance will have to be contributed by all the looters who produced the Slumdog movie only to provide fun with the chill poverty of exploited people of Dharavi, and ran off with the money. Idlers of NGOs. will have to fight for this great idea of Dharavi development and rehabilitate its dwellers decently by all means.

I share your view,but a project aiming at Dharavi slum regeneration will demand at least Rs.50,000 cr( >$1000 mln.) 1/2 of this to be contribued by K'nidhi govt, other half by Maharashtra where Dharavi is located.TN gives freebies amounting to hundreds of crores of Rs.for vote catching.(Only about 25% subscribe to DMK ideology if any (which is not clear to most except the part covering TV-cinema,Tamil,anti this, that, ) but DMK is in power due to opportunist ,selfish alliances)

@lsjtifo I buy your point (although the kind of music that pleases only Indians may not please other peoples). I read from several websites that corruption of all kinds are eating into the vitals of India including Tamil Nadu state.RS.100 cr Rs.1000 million translates into US$.220 (apx) . I think your figure will be peanuts which won't be enough for uplifting the Tamil slum of Mumbai. If the chief minister of Tamilnadu can allot $1000-5000 for this but your corruption can eat away much of that.

AR Rahman became known in parts of the world after a film named SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE for which he scored music of a hotchpotch kind, certainly not one that can reach the millions of Indias' hearts.The slum luridly portrayed stood essentially for the Dharavi slum in which a majority of inhabitants are Tamils. The Conference using ARR's music should now spend Rs.100 cr for the development of Dharavi, per se, and also atonement removing the obscene manner in which Indian slums, and hence slums.THX.

i asked 10 of my friends 10 teachers (3 tamil teachers) 10 government servants 10 officers (police,retired army officer,) 10 illiterated people some of my relatives included wen is tamil semmozhi manadu all replied from june 23 to june 27 none replied "AANI 9 to 13" gethu po....:) i only told wat i have encountered ... it may not be truth but what i have seen....
