Kushiage is a kind of Japanese food in which little pieces of meat, seafood, shellfish, veggies and other things are put on a skewer, dipped in batter and breading and then deep fried.

There are a few basic types of kushiage restaurants in Japan:

1. A set meal with a few skewers, rice, a side dish and miso soup

2. Where they fry the food right before your eyes and the same sides as above.

3. Kushiage as one of the items of an izakaya (bar) menu.

3. Or tabehodai kushiage where you select and fry the kushiage yourself at your table.

I feature tabehodai kushiage in this video. I went to a national kushiage chain called Kushiya based out of Osaka. The price for dinner is about 2600 yen for 90 minutes of all you can eat fun. Lunch specials are available on weekends for 60 minutes for about half the price of a dinner.

The key to making a tabehodai kushiage meal a good deal is to of course eat lots. On average one skewer a restaurant like example number 2 from above cost about 100 yen. So just make sure you eat 26 or more kushiage skewers and it's a good deal!

To find the Kushiya I went to in Tokyo go to Shinjuku JR station. Go out the west exit, turn right, cross the street at the first cross walk on the street level and continue going right pass the HALC building, the McDonalds and the big flashy Las Vegas like pachinko parlor until you reach the corner across from Tomin Bank. Now turn around and you will see a large building called the Sunflower Building. This is a multi-story eating pleasure palace. Go to the elevators and select the 5th floor and you are there!

Try the other restaurants some other time or go across the street behind the KFC and all that to Yakitori Dori if you want to hang out with business men sling some beers and eat some really great grilled cheap food. But more on that later!

  • to be honest i don't know. But still the best bang for your buck is at one of the tabehodai (90 minutes all you can eat). ^_^

    Excellent choice.

  • I always thought the music I used for these videos were sort of cheesy because I selected them from the video editing software I used, At the same time it seems to fit so I am glad that other people think so too!

    Thank you for watching.

  • how much in 2010 for a big guy to really eat? PS I DUG the tunes!

  • I was there and loved it! There were long queue and we had to wait about an hour but it was worth it. There were many kind of skewers to choose from and I don't think I got to try half of them. Frying them at our own table was so much fun. Now I have small frying cooker at home so that we can have our own kushiage party. Thanks for the video!

  • Sadly I have visited Japan many times on vacation and last year I was able to live there as a student for a year.

My major is in Japanese history and language. I study Japanese cuisine as a hobby thanks to my patient Japanese friends. I have studied Japanese tea ceremony and will soon study chakaiseki. Thank you very much for watching my videos I am glad you enjoy them. ^_^ I love sharing my knowledge of Japan and if you have anything to share I would love to hear it!
