"I sailed to find her, in distant regions likeliest to hold her whom I desired above all things to know, the muse, the woman of the mirage and echo".-Robert Graves.
As a performance video artist, I use my body as a moving sculpture that resonates with eastern and ancient postures, and philosophies. My work explores the sensuality and femininity of the female form that has been lost in this postmodern society. Deep within the deserts of my subconscious you encounter Maya my Alter Ego. She waits in loneliness within a timeless world, for you to leave the minimal, gallery space and be enraptured by the floridity.
Just a documentation of the day we filmed my performance for my final degree show installation. It will consist of a wall projection of my performance, 2 TV monitors showing henna being drawn on hands and feet and a small intimate room for visitors to sit and enjoy! :D
The final edit of my performance will be dream-like and in slower motion so I (As Maya) will move into different Hindu/Yoga postures to look like a moving statue... My Alter ego final comes to life and becomes a part of me.
I have been studying Belly dance for 10 years and now Odissi/Mudras for a year. For this project I have been training everyday none stop with Ashtanga yoga, meditation, Mudras and Odissi movements as well as Indian philosophy, magic realism and mythology to prepare me for my final degree show piece, I will continue to learn more about these subjects but I hope I have succeeded in looking as authentic as I possibly can in a short space of time.
Thank you to Katie, Holly, Stephanie and Simon for a brilliant day on the beach!
