@robespierrebeauregar The MMB where's their shield and capes only when performing outdoors, the jacket itself has much more detail and therefore is used during more "intimate" settings where people can see the detail (i.e. BoR and Crisler Concert). Also, the use of the yellow shield outdoors is to stand out, the goal for the athletic department and the university is to have everyone in the stands where maize and not blue during football games... hope this clears it up.

why don't their uniforms have the yellow shield on the front? what is the protocol for when they wear them and when they don't?

Haha that was awesome. I controlled myself after the sousaphones finished lining up. But lost it again when I saw the color guard hopping on the side. XD Sooo cool. lol
