Longview Police begins Commercial Motor Vehicle
Enforcement Program
In July of 2009, the Longview Police Department Traffic Section began a Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Program with the goal of making Longview streets safer for motorists.
The creation of this program was made possible by a change in state law that allows for cities with a population of over 50,000 residents to create commercial motor vehicle enforcement programs in their jurisdictions. The Longview Police Department currently has two officers that have been trained and certified by the Texas Department of Public Safety as commercial motor vehicle enforcement officers.
In the first month of the program, 69 commercial vehicles were inspected in Longview. Of these 69 vehicles, 218 violations were found and 18 vehicles were taken out of service due to safety violations. The most common violations found are commercial vehicles that are overweight, have defective brakes or have operators that are driving in excess of their allowable driving hours. Overweight vehicles are not only hazardous to other motorists due to increased distances needed to stop, but are responsible for damaging Longview roads that have to be repaired at taxpayer expense.
