Episode #1. William Colton rides into a town one month after Appomatox. Inside, there is a young man, not much more than a boy, who is talking really tough. An old man fresh out of a prison camp is there as well. The old man, Ab Nichols, fought for the Confederacy, and is offended when the young drunk, Jody Merriman, desecrates the Confederate flag. That's when Colton gets involved. As he fights for this man's honor, he remembers back to the last day of the Civil War and another young man he came face-to-face with.
Lloyd Bridges as William Colton
Tony Bill as Jody Merriman
Whit Bissell as Ab Nichols
Joe Haworth as Sergeant
John Hoyt as Colonel
Lou Krugman as Bartender
Michael Mortensen as Young Confederate Boy
Gregg Palmer as Adjutant
Stephen Roberts as Doctor
James Sikking as Confederate Captain
Yet another "cerebral" western in the vein of "The Rebel". Excellent program!
Who and go wrong with Whit Bissel and John Hoyt!

"'CREST- the toothpaste for families who want fewer cavities, and the ONLY one accepted by the American Dental Association...has brought you 'THE LONER'!". Procter & Gamble originally co-sponsored the series with Philip Morris; that's why their product is featured in the lower corner of the screen during the closing credits.

An excellent episode from a terrific series. Superb tight script, as one would expect from Rod Serling. As if this were not enough, a score by the great Jerry Goldsmith.
It's a pity there was never a movie made involving Colton after the series ended prematurely.
Thank you mitchrmp. John
