It is very difficult to write something that's both a good metal song and also something you can shoot spaceships to. This is the result - over the top and bombastic, but nothing too flashy.

I spent some time developing a computer game, Splinterblast, as a portfolio piece (trying to find a job, and all that). Of course, a game requires original music, because to do otherwise would be copyright infringement, and I couldn't write original music without making a video for it to post on YouTube. So, this is me playing the guitars for the metal version of the main theme superimposed on a gameplay video. For an overview of how this was recorded, please read the description here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0Ud60oR-dQ . You can also visit my portfolio channel ( http://www.youtube.com/user/ChaosGameDev ) and watch a normal gameplay video without me playing over it ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntF2QekUStw&fmt=22 ).

There's also a techno/electronic version, which came about when I accidentally replaced the "Rock Kit" drums in GarageBand with a "Techno Kit" and then replaced most of the guitars and bass with synthesizers. I might post that later, because it's kind of cool.

  • Hi Nikhil, great composition. I really liked this one as it combines 2 things I like. Metal and games, hehe.

No seriously - As I grew up in the late 70s and 80s there it was all about videogames and I really like that oldschool demo music thing like Amiga Soundtracker music etc. I remember in the early 90s I was also doing some experimenting and compositions for doom levels I made with the DEU editor. But they mostly sucked due to standard Midi instrumentation hehe.

  • Hey, thanks. These days, there can actually be serious money made in composition for video games. Even besides Rock Band/Guitar Hero and bands licensing songs for games (Megadeth and Gears of War, for example), big companies are willing to pay a good amount for original soundtracks for a AAA title. If I were a better musician, I'd seriously consider doing that instead of programming the things. :P
