Jelly Roll Morton wrote this blues to pay tribute to Buddy Bolden, one of the first jazz musicians that influenced jazz in the New Orleans of the early 20th century. Buddy Bolden was never recorded and the style in which he played will never be known for sure but the legend lives on through the members of his band that did live long lives. Buddy Bolden spent many years in a mental institute. The recurring story was that he played "jass" so hard that he blew his brains out.

  • "Open up that window and let that bad air out"

  • "Let Mr. Bolden play"............

  • How long did it take to learn this?

  • Not long but I learned it when I was 15yrs old. I think I first learned it from Jelly Roll's recording.

  • What marvelous chord augmentations! And changes in time. Those less refined might recognize this theme as coming from Funky Butt. Jelly usually, but not always, took a little space (like a comma)before the word so that "but" would put it in a respectable context.

  • You always add an extra dimension to the history behind the tunes- always appreciated by us and interesting to the general audience. Our goal has been to share America's musical history to a wider audience. How fortunate for those of us who were touched and guided by the originators of this segment of American jazz history.

As you correctly stated- those "changes in time" have come directly from listening to many recordings of Morton where he always reinvented his own music. Thank you!

  • cool.... where can i find the score ?

  • Regarding Funcky Butt - actually this is the precursor to that one, it didn't come after it. The original song, according to the entry on Buddy bolden in Wikipedia (worth reading) was supposedly about farting (!) and so the lyric "I thought I heard Buddy Bolden say/ funky butt butt take it away" and later "open up the window let that bad air out" can be understood from that perspective!

Maybe everybody else already knew this but it was news to me!
