I was a junior in High School (Kenwood Academy) at that time and we had an extended Xmas break because they closed the schools that Monday and Tuesday when we were supposed to go back thanks to the blizzard and I was happy as hell!
I was still living there when that huge storm hit, 2nd biggest in Chicago history with 21-22" of snow January 1-3. I moved to Georgia just weeks later!
i was 1 of only 2 trucks that made it to O'Hare after the snow started falling, it took me 4 1/2 hours to get from Elgin to the airport, i worked non-stop for 2 1/2 days hauling snow off the runways and terminals, after 2 1/2 days more trucks finally arrived to help out, the boss finally had the 2 of us pull over and sleep for 2 hours, then we were back at it for another day and a half, I don't think I'll ever forget that storm, i was tired, but i felt good, i did my job
This was an epic storm. I moved to a new apartment just before the snow hit, and was stuck in that apartment with no TV or phone. My old apartment was only a few blocks away, so in order to make a phone call I had to walk over there to use the phone. By the time the storm was done, the streets were completely deserted, and I walked down the streets of Chicago through tire ruts. It was completely silent. I'll never forget it.
