On April 17, Governor Deval Patrick made his inaugural visit to an Islamic institution organized by the Muslim American Society (MAS Boston) at the grand new Islamic Cultural Center in Boston (ISBCC). During his visit, Governor Patrick toured the site (including prayer halls, classrooms and the Common Word Cafe) prior to holding a formal meeting with a group of 65 community leaders from across the State. The assembled leadership addressed the community's concerns around issues of recognition as a constituency, discrimination, and usurious lending by Banks and credit card companies. Governor Patrick conveyed his wishes to engage in a partnership with Muslim-Americans as a way to meet our generational responsibility. The Governor's next scheduled visit is on May 22, 2010, when 1,000 Muslim community members from across Massachusetts will convene for a public action around issues of recognition of the community's pain, presence and power.
