In this lesson of learn free music theory I cover Orchestral instruments, including how to transpose instruments like Bb Trumpet, F English Horn, and more into concert pitch!

Also, I had to include an awesome link a viewer sent me. This link shows the range of orchestral instruments on the piano.

  • thanks i really learned this lesson love you Lypur

  • correction.

viola should not be under C instrument category. Viola read alto clef.

  • btw piano is a percussion.

  • can you talk about passing tones

  • @Oturan219 who the fuck knows.

  • So a C on a Bb trumpet sounds like a Bb, then why not just call it a Bb?

  • @tbonesown >.< i botched the note transposition

    Violin - C D E F G

    Trumpet - D E F# G A

  • I totally love these videos; In my 12+ years of playing music (brass instruments) I NEVER learned theory, and now that i'm teaching more than playing, it's helpful to know why things are the way they are. It's invaluable information.

    Thanks a ton Andrew!

  • Clarification of the instrument transposition; Andrew's explanation confused me a little bit so I wanted to reiterate. Bb instruments' "C" note is in the same place as the concert pitch "C", but sounds a whole step (+2nd) lower. So, if transposing (for ex.) a Violin part into trumpet, you would RAISE the violin part a +2nd so that the trumpet would play the same concert notes.

    Violin - C D E F G

    Trumpet - D E F# G# A#

Same pitches, Bb just written +2nd higher.

  • I think if you have a Bb trumpet and the score its in E major, the trumpet should be written in F# mayor , in order to get everybody playing in the same tone, dont you think so?
