Should I scale up, or should I scale out?
It's a question Chad Sakac, VP, VMware Technology Alliance for EMC has heard again and again. And he heard it one more time along with Scott Lowe of EMC on the "Ask the bloggers panel" at VMworld 2011 in Las Vegas.
In our interview, Lowe and Sakac ran down a list of issues that came up during the panel discussion:
Can I get more visibility into storage?: Issues of storage came up again and again. It validates VMware's approach to making storage more accessible. But, Lowe admits, VMware has a lot more work to do in that area.
How should I scale?: Up or out? After hearing it for the umpteenth time, Sakac has decided he's going to write a post giving the conditions as to when you want to do one or the other.
Should I use Storage I/O Control and Storage DRS?: Advice from the vendors is to just turn it on. There are advantages to be had just by enabling it.
Look beyond specific infrastructure pieces: Sakac specifically mentioned vShield improvements, improvements in SRM, and distributed and stretched clusters.
People want straight clear answers for everything, but it's not that easy with virtualization. Rarely is anything black or white, said Sakac.
