Westmoreland Human Opportunities, in conjunction with Pittsburgh Social Ventures, held a poverty simulation on May 23, 2007. The hour and a half simulation (created by Missouri's Community Action) was designed to give middle to upper class participants an idea of what it is like living in poverty while raising a family. During the simulated four week program nearly 50 participants had to do their best to provide for their families while sustaining their housing status. The video is posted on Westmoreland Human Opportunities website to give site viewers a glimpse of what th poverty simulation is about and what impact it has on the people who participate.
The video was shot and edited by Community Action Association of Pennsylvania (CAAP) Communications Associate, David E. Graf (david@thecaap.org). Video was shot on a Sony VX-2000 camcorder, sound was provided by the on-board microphone and a Samson wireless system. The assets here edited together using Final Cut Pro and prepared for website distribution using Compressor.

My church is having our first Poverty simulation Sunday night. I'm going to play the part of a drug dealer. It will be interesting. I've been praying that God will give me grace and show me what to do.

I think this is an excellent exercise to educate the community about how low income and working familis strugle to make ends meet. Unfortunately, some families can't make the ends meet with hard work and effort.
