PRIVATE BUSES NOW PLY ON EXPRESSWAY

Private buses are now plying on the Southern Expressway.
The launch of the private bus service on the Expressway took place today. Minister C.B. Ratnayake joined in the launching ceremony held at the entrance to the Expressway at Kottawa.
The Minister said they had to enter new technology. There is a set of regulations for the Expressway and legal provisions have been given to ensure the safety of the commuters. He called on the bus owners to ensure that the commuters are transported safely.
Two private buses will be operating from Maharagama to Galle. The first trip will begin from Maharagama at 5.30 a.m. Hitherto only buses of the Sri Lanka Transport Board were permitted to operate on this Expressway. However, there was an increase demand from the commuters to travel on this road. As such, the new private service was launched to meet the demand. Commuters expressed their deep appreciation for meeting their demands.
In the meantime, a function was held at Galle under the patronage of Southern Province Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal de Silva to welcome the first bus that left from Kottawa this morning.
