Actually that's not the case, 757s have been operating transatlantic flights since the 1980s without winglets and airlines continue to operate the aircraft transatlantic without winglets today. Winglets improve fuel efficiency, but they are not mandatory at all.

i flew on a us airways last year 757 and it was fine forward and back
