The heavy snow fall in basingstoke on monday 21st december 09 lead to stand still traffic for miles on end causing people to be stranded in their cars for over 9 hours. This lead to over 2,000 motorists giving up and abandoning their cars and walking the rest of their journey. This video shows images of the morning after showing cars left on the roadsides. There are also some photos from the night of some of the traffic. Basingstoke was one of the worst hit places in england!!!

  • Remember the day well. 5 hours to get out of Festival Place carpark. Absolute joke, not aimed at any Basingstoke residents but people haven't a clue how to drive in the snow. 5 hours to exit car park, 1.5 hours to get out of Basingstoke. only then took 55mins to get back to Swindon in the snow on empty roads. That said i was in the company hack so didn't really care to much. Apart from coming of the Robin Hood roundabout backwards at about 40mph it was quite an easy journey home.

  • why are people filming Basingstoke? dont get it

  • Aah that was funny times.

  • This is alot of snow for you there??? HAHAHA this is pathetic, yesterday i was driving trough 30cm thick snow here in Estonia

  • looks like something off a horror film, abandoned cars

  • Haha I was born in Basingstoke but live in Italy now, I was there for the weekend to see family and was stuck in festival place from 1pm to 8pm, then on the roads outside until midnight...

    Damn funny!

  • The situation in Basingstoke was ridiculous.

Unfortunately many of the problems were caused by inappropriate driving for the conditions, a lack of common sense, road rage and discourteous drivers!

I drove back from Woking to my home in Basingstoke in little over 2 hours on the evening of 21/12/09.

I didnt even need to use my snow chains I keep in my car.

Its not rocket science to drive in snowy conditions.

If it was, many parts of the world would come to a standstill for most of the winter.

  • Thank you so much for this...I was born in Basingstoke and lived there for 30 years but never saw anything like this!
