I visited Lincoln's memorial on 8/14/08 with my wife and 2 young daughters and what Jon shares is on the mark. It reminds me of what a mentor quoted to me when I didn't get a job: "Sad defeats are installments to victory" (which I'm now finding is a version of sorts from Jacob Riis' "Some defeats are only installments to victory").
