Wearing the right helmet when riding a bicycle, scooter, in-line skates or skateboard can lower the risk of brain injury by up to 88 percent. Some tips when selecting and buying a bicycle helmet for your child include:
•Let your child pick a helmet that he or she likes. Choose bright colors to help drivers see your child.
•Look for a CPSC Certified label on the box.
•Try the helmet on your child. It should be snug but not tight. The helmet should not move from side to side when your child shakes his head.
•Replace any helmet that is damaged or has been involved in a crash.
You can tell a helmet fits correctly when:
•The helmet sits flat on top of the head and rests 1 or 2 finger-widths above the eyebrows. The forehead will be covered.
•The strap forms a V below your childs ear.
•The chin strap buckles snugly under the jaw, and no more than 1 or 2 fingers will fit under the strap.
