White Heat
written by Will Hudson
performed by Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys
recorded 7 June 1937
released as Vocalion 03614 in August 1937

In this mad session in Dallas that Monday was:
Everett Stover - trumpet
Ray de Greer, Tony Mott, Robert "Zeb" McNally - reeds
Bob Wills, Cecil Brower - fiddles
Al Stricklin - piano
Herman Arnsteiger, Sleepy Johnson - guitars
Leon McAuliffe - steel guitar
Joe Ferguson - bass
William "Smokey" Dacus - drums

Better sound the alarm because the barn will be burning after this "far-from-square" dance! This one is for my buddy Mark (SwingMan1937).

  • I am very glad and happy that some people likes this tune. I dont!

  • You forgot Jesse Ashlock. on the fiddle.

  • What a spectacular recordings. As much as I listen to these 30s sides from Bob Wills, I never get tired of them. Nobody quite managed to duplicate this magic ever again.

  • Yeah, tastes change - and the industry feeds from its menu. Even the later Playboy sessions went 'Hollywood', became over produced and not to my liking. This session I rave about likely offended many country conservatives in its day. But I'm so glad we can still get much of what we want; thanks, 'Tube!

  • @MrDarwinsDog I agree and nowadays its a bunch of pop country bullshit!

  • I've been blown away from this piece for decades - the best western swing, the best jazz, the best sophisticated steel work - done. Slap bass, add drums,... Just think, you tune in to you country radio station and what do you hear? And before the war. What a session!!!

  • bob wills and his texas playboys when only the best will do.

  • Oh, SLAP that bass!!!!!

Way to make a triumphant return, Dave - welcome back, guy. :)
