Bill Parrish, media tycoon, loving father and still a human being, is about to celebrate his 65th birthday. One morning, he is contacted by the Inevitable - by hallucination, as he thinks. Later, Death itself enters his home and his life, personified in a man's body: Joe Black has arrived. His intention was to take Bill with him, but accidentally, Joe's former host and Bills beautiful daughter Susan have already met. Joe begins to develop certain interest in life on earth as well as in Susan, who has no clue who she's flirting with.

Der Großunternehmer William Parrish hört nach einem Herzinfarkt eine seltsame Stimme, die ihn an den nahenden Tod erinnert. Gleichzeitig lernt seine Tochter Susan in einem Café einen jungen Mann kennen, der kurz darauf bei einem Verkehrsunfall stirbt. Davon bekommt Susan jedoch nichts mit.

Es stellt sich heraus, dass die Stimme dem Tod gehört, der den Körper des jungen Mannes nutzen will, um eine unbestimmte Zeit unter den Menschen zu weilen. Parrish soll ihm als Führer dienen und darf so lange weiterleben, wie der Aufenthalt des Todes auf der Erde interessant bleibt.

Der Tod soll im Kreis der Familie wohnen, den Angehörigen wird er als Joe Black vorgestellt. Er verliebt sich in Parrishs Tochter Susan, die als Ärztin arbeitet. Es kommt zum Streit mit Parrish, der seinen eigenen Tod akzeptiert, aber um das Leben seiner Tochter fürchtet. Parrish macht sich Sorgen, dass Joe nach dem Ende seines Besuchs Susan mitnehmen könnte. Joe Black hilft Parrish auf dessen Geburtstagsparty, sein Unternehmen -- sein Lebenswerk -- vor der Zerschlagung zu bewahren. Er gibt sich während einer Telefonkonferenz mit dem Aufsichtsrat als ein Mitarbeiter der Steuerbehörden aus und stellt einen unehrlichen Manager, der durch eine Intrige den Verkauf des Unternehmens eingefädelt hatte, um sich selbst zu bereichern, zur Rede. Dieser gesteht seine Taten, worauf der Aufsichtsrat, der alles mitgehört hat, den geplanten Verkauf platzen lässt, den bloßgestellten Manager entlässt und Parrish rehabilitiert. Schließlich nimmt Joe nur Parrish mit ins Jenseits, der Körper des jungen Mannes wird lebendig zurückgegeben.

When I first saw this movie I thought it was way too long. When I saw it again I realized what helped make those 3 hours seem worth it - the music. This is beautiful.
