This is a live demonstration from the 2008 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures which illustrates the concept of exponential growth by setting off a chain reaction involving 225 armed mouse traps, each of which has a ping pong ball sitting on top.

You can watch the 2008 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in full at: http://research.microsoft.com/~cmbishop or by visiting the Royal Institution web site.

There is a dedicated web site to accompany the 2008 Christmas Lectures, with ten interactive games as well as downloadable PDF instructions for experiments which can be conducted at home or at school: http://www.rigb.org/christmaslectures08

  • Chain reaction? Yes. Exponential growth? No. You have one ball setting off one trap, which sets off one more trap. Exponential growth would involve one ball setting off more than one trap with each setting off more than one trap each and so on. Your set up would need either 2 balls per trap, or don't glue the traps down so the traps themselves could bounce and set off other traps.

  • @hedele1:

  • Da stimmt was nicht: "Die Wachstumsrate wächst selbst exponentiell"?
