The Marriage of Mary and Martha

Mary Going and Martha Rynberg, a San Francisco-Bay Area lesbian couple, were among the 18,000 gay, lesbian and transgender couples legally married in California in 2008. Photographer Ryan Anson followed the couple beginning two weeks after the California Supreme Court overturned the ban on gay marriage and for the next seven months as Mary and Martha planned their wedding, got married, adopted their second daughter, and experienced the disappointment of the passage of California Proposition 8, prohibiting gay marriage.
