@ArjanSnuk 'Heathen' in English and 'heiden' in Dutch meant 'of the heath' (the open country) and were meant to translate Latin 'paganus' meaning 'of the countryside'. The terms came to mean 'heathen' in the modern sense because, at first, only people in cities and towns took to Christianity and country people mostly kept worshipping their old gods.
