@jarrod1685 Rodents aren't pests by definition. Shit in Australia more then half our native animals are marsupial rodents. It's when an animal interferes with our food production that it becomes a pest. In this case it's likely rats/mice were likely eating the legs off live chickens.
If you're worried about plague then you'd be much better served by focusing on squirrels and other animals which carry fleas, fleas which actually do have Bubonic plague in the wild even today
