Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you.....17 operator of one of these babies!

If this a miner man... I am a jet pilot. He's spending more time backing up then cutting. He wouldn't make it a half a shift where I came from. He may be scared if they are pulling pillars... but if he was, he should shut the machine off between cars and listen instead of all that racket, cutting nothing and more or less waiting!

@Ms2blackcats I am a coal mine engineer working in NSW, Australia. We work the 'Great Northern Seam' about 3m in height. We develop using superpanels (two continuous miners developing side by side feeding 3 common shuttle cars) and extract production coal with secondary workings. The term 'stump' isnt used here in australia we say stook, not sure what you guys call it over there in the states.
Oh and btw, me trying to start an online relationship with you is probably the least of your worries
-
@Ms2blackcats Yes it can be reffered to as secondary mining . Generally the first stage of mining is developing the pillars underground and supporting all the roadways with rockbolts and mesh. The secondary mining is; pillar extraction: after all the pillars have been developed the miner positions itself at the furthest developed pillar (away from the mine surface exit) it then starts extracting the coal from the pillars allowing the roof to collapse in, in a safe and controlled manner.

@calumnicol Dear Mr Coal Miner, please don't think I'm trying to start some on line relationship because I'm a girl. I majored i geology I trained horses for my tuition had an accident literally dislocated my ankle and fractured my leg. No coal mine for me ever. I am interested it in and support coal and more important miners . If your in WestVa are you in the Kittannning Seam? That phrase stump is an old time miners expression isn't it
-
@calumnicol in doing this job is it ever called "second Mining" or I am way off track. ?
-
@Ms2blackcats a stump or 'stook' of coal is basically a pillar of coal left behind after the production phase of the underground mining process. Once the pillars of coal have been developed, the continuous miner will mine the pillar, robbing it of its coal and allow the roof to cave in where the pillar was. Generally to protect the surface above the underground mine from subsidence a 'stook' or 'stump' of coal will be left behind to assist in supporting the overburden and reduce subsidence.

Seriously the name of the cracked article that brought me here is "The 7 Most Needlessly Terrifying Pieces of Heavy Machinery" when I have not been scared once, instead I have been awed by the awesomeness of man's ingenuity. I think the guy that wrote the article, Brian Thompson, is a technophobe.
