The defense for owning a gun is that "I need a gun to protect my family from violent criminals", which statistically speaking is ridiculous. Violent crime doesn't happen enough for everybody needing a gun for protection. If you aren't a cop or a hunter, owning a gun makes as much sense as owning a 4x4 truck and only driving it in a city. It's your right to own it, but there is no real need to own it.
