We finally passed into China today. Although Hong Kong and Macao are part of China, they do not require visas as does China. In addition, China has cracked down during the Olympics and will not give unlimited entry visas. Ours were for one visit not to exceed 30 days, while Alissa and Steve had earlier obtained unlimited entry 30 day visas.

Much of the art I have seen, was a rendition in one form or another of the Li River Mountains, created when the soft limestone eroded in the rain.

This city is a must tourist stop for its unique geology (mix of hard and soft limestone hills) which resulted in uniques hills sculpted when the rain eroded the soft limestone. It was so peaceful at Guilin as I hope our pictures will show. Ostensively, Guilin was the place where both North Korean and North Vietnamese officers were schooled prior to and during their respective wars with the US. Before a wonderful breakfast in a 5 star Sheraton (yes there really is such an animal), we watched the people come out to do their dancing and Tai Chi. It is wonderful to see the whole country involved in exercise, regardless of age. We had a wonderful walk through the park and markets. Now we were ready for our trip cruising down the Li River. The river reminded me of our years on the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers with our families. About 12 boats took off at the same time. They serve lunch and wait patiently to assume their place in the front of the pack so their passengers can have an uninterrupted view of the mountains and the river. Finally, it was off to Shanghai for the evening.
