Exactly 11 years ago today, Microsoft was sued for Monopoly, however, they didn't loose the trial. http://pop17.com
Monopoly is a popular subject today because the EU is suing Google and Intel for monopoly in Europe. Since the dot com bust the strong companies that survived saw little competition in a time where technology was moving so fast so they were able to dominate the market.

I'm a bit tired atm, but let's see if I got this right.. so microsoft had to be sued in order for windows users to be able to use firefox instead of IE ?

Microsoft has also been holding back the free, and open software movement . Microsoft sued many Linux based companies . they sued TomTom , they sued Red Hat Linux , and they sued Android Phones that are all Linux based for patent infringement, they sued Lindows... But Microsoft lost all of them. I use Linux Mint , and Linux Ubuntu. Welcome to GPLv3
