This is delicious! He moves around and through the theme, constantly trying to "trip up" the rhythmic pattern of the melody. The tabla player has his solo starting at 2:30, while Shahidji keeps the rhythm. After that the scope of the Ustad's taans (riffs) widens and becomes increasingly complex and varied. There is a lot of delightful interchange and wit in the contest-cooperation between the two performers. Fun!
