For the common baseball fan, home runs are clearly the most spectacular aspect of the game: a power hitter takes place at the plate, hits a ball deep into centerfield, it's going, going, there's a chance and it's gone!

It's your instant game-changer, turning mere hope into strong confidence and losses into wins with a simple swing of the bat.

Most people glorify home run hitters, rightfully so. For me however, it's a neglected aspect of baseball that always fascinated me: base stealing.

Marquis was one of those self-propelled human cannonballs I admired so much and a very good one at it too. In 1991 and 1992, he stole respectively 76 and 78 bases, leading the NL in that department. He was a speedy centerfielder with amazing defensive skills (4 gold glove awards of which two with the Expos). Grissom would often catch balls at the warning track that all thought were beyond reach.

In 1993 and '94, he was a proud Montreal representative at the all-star game two years in a row.

But as he got better with age, he also got more expensive and as the Expos would do with any high-salary player, they traded him away (in his case to the Braves for Roberto Kelly, Tony Tarasco and Esteban Yan).

The 1995 Expos definitely weren't the same without him and they ended the season 5th in the eastern division with a 66-78 W-L record.

So here he is ladies and gents:
Le voltigeur de centre, centerfielder, le numéro 9, number 9,
MARQUIS GRISSOM!

Please note that I don't own any of these pics and song's copyrights.

Enjoy.
