Fermentation can occur for months, or years, according to some cigar makers. The essential components are enough tobacco to create significant weight (heat), moisture, and extreme attention to make sure the tobacco does not 'burn out' or 'get spent'. Throughout most cigar making countries, these large piles are called Pilones and they must be meticulously unraveled to make sure the tobacco ferments evenly.
