On Tuesday, December 1, 2009, shortly after 1:00pm, the Foundation Douglas A-4B Skyhawk made it's first post-restoration flight at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. The aircraft had last flown on May 4, 1992, more than seventeen and a half years ago. Not having encountered any serious problems during this test flight, the aircraft continued home to Waukegan Regional Airport, escorted by the Foundation L-39 Albatros, later that same day. This marks the end of an extended restoration project that began two and a half years ago.
When parked, I notice how it sits with quite a bit of pitch up angle. Is this because it does not have the compressible nose gear like todays aircraft? Like how an F-18's nose gear pops up with that stored energy in the compressed nose gear when launching from a carrier. Can anyone tell me if this nose-up design is to help in carrier launches. Does it lack that compressible nose gear like I mentioned.
