Highlights coverage from Round 2 of the New Zealand D1NZ Drifting Championship Series held at Pukekohe Park Raceway!

It was a controversial and drama filled event at Pukekohe with teams up and down pit-lane facing tough local council enforcement on the 95db noise restrictions. Kiwi Ingenuity and late night fabrication after practice day saw teams return to the track with new muffler inventions to avoid being removed from the track and sent home.

Mad Mike Whiddett, Fresh with confidence after winning Round 1 at Manfeild was sporting a truck stack out the rear to try muffle the quad rotor beast fans across the world have come to love - disappointing for the punters but also a huge threat to Mad Mike's championship, with the Red Bull RX7 well down on power due to the exhaust changes it was an uphill battle to try tackle the infamous Pukekohe sweeper, the worlds fastest drift corner.

Ex Champ Fanga Dan Woolhouse was a hot favorite after practice with huge smoke and fast entries in the Castrol Edge Commodore, setting the pace at 196kmph into turn one.

Tectaloy's Gaz Whiter was adamant about stepping up the pace after a slow start to his 3x championship title defence at Manfeild and would go on to finish 4th for the round despite a huge crash during qualifying. Many teams rushed to Gaz Whiters pit bay to patch the car up for the final session, the Tectaloy Nissan S14 making the top 4 victory skids.

Talk was all about the rookie however, Darren Benjamin stepping up from Pro-Am into the Pro-Championship class this season and finding himself in the spotlight claiming Top Qualifier and finishing on the podium in 3rd, look out for big things in the future from this talented young gun!

The Pukekohe Round was eventually won by Australasian drift ace Curt Whittaker, who like Gaz Whiter had an average start to his Championship race and was out to proove his talent behind the wheel in the immaculately presented all-black R34 Skyline. In the hopes of picking up a sponsor to take him through to the finals at Hampton Downs next year the Tectaloy International Drift Challenge winner dominated the competition until meeting his 4-door rival Cole Armstrong in the V Energy Skyline. After an intense rerun it was Curt who claimed the top step, a huge victory infront of a massive Auckland crowd!

  • noise control in motorsport... wtf... just cancel out Puke raceway with all that bitching and move somewhere else, I know its one of the best/most exciting tracks and rounds but with that council bullshit (who I hate btw) just pack up and don't even go there... I bet next year the noise restriction is probably gona be 80db MAX... I'm just angry at all this RESTRICTION crap, it's bad already as it is on a normal ROAD car...

  • qia jeten

  • Such epic videos!

  • @Grunzaa Highly likely. A lot to do with the proximity of the houses to the track methinks.
