On August, 5, 1873 in Nebraska near the Republican river 1,000 to 1,500 Lakota Sioux warriors attacked a Pawnee Indian Buffalo hunting party numbering between 400 and 700 people many of which were women and children.

In the ensuing rout somewhere between 70 and 150 Pawnees were killed mostly women and children.

  • Crazy Horse felt the Nez Perce campaign was a front to get the Lakota warriors to face Sitting Bull, he and Touch the Clouds forbade any Oglala from joining that fight. A lot of people became scouts, it paid and could keep their families from starving. It gave them access to weapons.

  • The Pawnee's aided the US in suppressing not only enemy tribes, but their own as well. They were treated worse than the "hostile" tribes, and they knew it themselves. Its not fair to assume that the Pawnee's were innocent bystanders. They aided in attacks that claimed the lives of Cheyenne, Sioux, and Arapaho women and children. The Pawnee and Arikara were once the most feared by the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Cheyenne people until they were dessimated by disease.

  • killing woman and children wow real hard. congrats heres a medal.

  • No Prob brotha.

  • Since he hadn't rode with military at the time of his death, nor had he been thru the training, we will never know. Personally I think once he learned Sitting Bull had accepted the Nez Perce, no way would he have moved against them. He was ready to leave, he had no reason to have any loyalty to the military. We can't all be popular, can we?

  • I have heard Crazy Horse was suspicious about joining the scouts but there is little doubt, given time, he would have rode with the US military against the Nez Perce. They were certainly traditional enemies of the Lakota just as were the Crow, Shoshone, Arikara, and Blackfoot. It is far easier to name their tribal friends (there were so few) than it is to name their enemies. Pretty much everyone except the Northern Cheyenne and the Arapaho. Why were they so unpopular? They were conquerors.
