@badfoody - The ships look almost entirely like something from Naboo off Phantom Menace. The Tharks (green aliens) look like descendants of a Watto-Voldemort love child, and the battles look LOTR-like. The film is only BASED on the ERB story, but uses modern storytelling techniques and cinematic principles established well after ERB kicked it.It's in 3D for heaven's sake. Of course it's modern!
