i remember when i was about 10 or 11 in 1195 or so and me and my buddies were exploring "the berry" and found an old file from a patient who cut his mom's nose off and was eventually let out to live in the woods..it was pretty cool exploring..

Great video. I actually grew up on Carter Rd (my neighbor's car is filmed at 2:24) and have explored Byberry more times that I can count. I actually ran a website dedicated to Byberry at one point (around 2001-2002). This video and it's subsequent counterparts really bring back fond memories. Does anybody remember the haunted house that was run out of the building at 2:45? I believe it was only open for a couple of Halloween seasons during the early 90s. Anyways, thank you for the great post!

Goddog. I have much respect for you. You were not one of those idiots who vandalized Byberry, but you restored it in a way. You are the one who made the site on Byberry's history, are you not? And you take great photos. I'm sorry Byberry is gone, and I'm sure you must be, too.

I'm pretty sure the "Pink Floyd Voices" were one of the several guys ringtones. But yes, i'm sure the place is haunted.

i definitely think at the 8 minute 18 second mark you can here kids singing the song another brick in the wall by Pink Floyd and their singing the part of the song that says "we don't need no education"
Hospitals for the 'insane' were Asylums for the outcast people 'worked' growing crops, kitchen, dairy
when things are turned over to bureaucrats
distant 'do-gooders' who haven't a clue > bottom-line saving money rather than
helping the 'least among us' >things go to 'ell
lambs to the wolves
we need Sanctuaries
let the 'inmates' run the Asylum

The more I learn about mental hospitals in the late 20th century, the more I understand that they were "underfunded" on purpose. They were wards of the state and "throw away people". The eugenics movement was a big reason for that. Often, they were victims of sham drug experiments too. The book "Mad in America: Bad Science, Bad Medicine..." is a very good resource and is available on ebay or in libaries.
