This presentation is based on a lecture outlining the emerging trend of fat-dissolving injections (using Lipodissolve) placed against fat-extracting surgical tecnnology (Liposuction-Liposculpture). While clearly an emerging trend, the use of injected medications needs standardization and better studies to assess its safety and effectiveness. Injection therapy is not as precise as surgery and requires multiple sessions over a year. It is still being evaluated and may offer promise in selected cases where there are minimal fat deposits.
At present, there is no standardization for the formulas used to inject the fat. There are unpredictable results for large areas. Under the neck will show some improvement and is the only area where it should be used if at all. Liposuction, liposculpture, and microliposculpture, are far more successful in one session. Often mesotherapy takes 4-6 sessions. It is more of an investigational consideration. As of Jan 2011 it is not advised. Donn Hickman MD
