snake doesn't represent america, it represents humanity and the passion for freedom from the ''prison'' that modern america (and generally the people in power) have created, that's why he destroys the tape in end. It's a direct message from carpenter against the capitalist system (so does his other great movie, ''they live'')

Around 7 mins Blowshimselfupdude makes some great points, but he should have really put in some spoiler alerts in there. reviews typically don't give away the ending.

they live is carpenters best film.  on the level of Terminator in terms of horror and suspense. check it out, it's from the 80s.

I love the movie. I think its the equivalent of a darker, low-budget Raiders of the Lost Ark, and I think it's Carpenter's best film (aside from The Thing).
