An Occasional Series - Bernini

I thought I'd try to put something out there rather than just responding to videos, and whilst I don't expect this to generate arguments, or even much comment I like the story behind Bernini's early career and its influence. (And of course giving an object lesson to all you evil fornicators in my small audience. Yes, I am looking at you)

He went on to construct two huge towers on St Peters which rapidly fell apart and had to be dismantled. As a result he was ridiculed and, aged 50, nearly lost everything, only to stage an amazing come back creating the "Ecstasy of St Teresa" - one of the most erotic religious statues ever made. Costanzia was eventually freed from jail by her husband. Bernini's brother, meanwhile, was caught raping a man in St Peter's square and escaped execution only through Bernini's intervention.

Well Bernini was the vatican's go to guy for vanity projects. He was good but he couldn't do architecture for shit. As I recall there was some sort of scandal over those 2 towers before they fell down. There was some very peculiar political machinations going on around him and some of it is still a mystery. eg. Someone else was originally commissioned to do those towers.
