Part 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90W0SFHyEtI Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 2. Adagio Sostenuto Sergey Rachmaninov Robin Hood Dell Orchestra William Kapell, piano Conducted by William Steinberg
@MrYou2ber Well I guess Its all in how you see things, I am sure Eric Carmen has made a few bucks off "All by myself" and probably not of it has gone to the Rachmaninov estate.
@sevadaj lol "ripping off" seems like a harsh phrase. He thought it was part of the public domain, and realized it wasn't. So he gave credit to Rachmaninoff on his recordings. But yes, it was borrowed from this concerto
There was no one like Kapell ...... no one could touch him ....... even Horowitz and Rubinstein conceited that there was nothing they could teach Kapell when Kapell asked if he could study with them. Kapell was so great. In his short lifespan, he achieved what most pianists try to achieve. Rachmaninov would be proud!
in this movement Kapell would have surely interpreted in a different way in live performings. a little less neutral than here, although its done with lots of his heart and musical phrasings.
He for sure was able to touch the public in a way only few pianists were able to.....
I've always thought Horowitz was the greatest pianist who ever lived, but these recordings of Kapell convince me without a doubt he is Horowitz' equal in every way. I love Horowitz' performances of the Rach 3rd and have always wondered what he would have sounded like playing the 2nd---now I know!
@billyguns2 because they were too great for this dieing world.

A skit by Igudesman and Joo alerted me to the striking similarity between this and the song "All By Myself" (01:37-02:01). Very strange...
